Direct Drive Turntable...Will it work with my amp?
So i have this old belt drive turntable, its time to upgrade and i want a direct drive one now. I was in the DJ store today and the guy asked me what i had my deck plugged into i told him it was plugged into a Yamaha DSP-A592 home cinema amp via AUX at the rear. Then he told me that a direct drive turntable would not work if i plugged it into my amp. Why is this?
There is no difference between the cartridges used for belt or direct drive or the output. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp for use with amps having no special "phono" input. Probably the table you were looking at didn't have a built-in phono preamp and since you told him you were using an "aux" input and didn't tell him you had a "phono" input, he didn't think it would work. He could have simply recommended a separate phono preamp though...
The Yamaha DSP-A592 has phono inputs and various line-level inputs. This means whether or not you buy a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, you're good to go either way.
Best deal I know of on a quality direct-drive right now...
