How to make a Stand up Bass Bridge for Electric Bass?
Iv been wanting to use a bow for my all natural yamaha bass. Then i realized that all i can use is the E + G strings. So i came to the conclusion to make a stand up bridge for it. Does anyone know how to?
ok, i'm intrigued, but i can think of some problems right away, namely, once you do this you are going to have such high action that it will be dificult to play, particularly with the middle strings. you might also find that it strains the neck of your bass, and might cause warping in the long run. also i imagine you will find that it throws off the intonation and the frets get very out of tune where the neck meets the body (of course the action might be so high you cant play those notes anyway) that being said, i dont see why you cant just try it briefly. so this is what i would do: first take a careful measurement between the body of your bass and where the strings are now. you are going to want to make it a little higer than that, but like i said, the action will be an issue so you are going to have to do your own custom design for the bridge to keep the action as low as possible (but, if you could have it big enough to fit a piezo pickup on there that might be fun, give you another tone option). you are going to need a jig saw to cut the shape of the bridge. you want thin wood, kinda on the softer end, but not too soft. i think pine would work. then you just cut the shape of the bridge, sand it down till its just right, make notches in it for your strings, and slip it on your bass just a little bit in front of the current bridge. use the tension of the strings to keep it in place.
