How long will be spring stretched by its weight?
I wonder how long will be spring stretched by its weight.
I can't solve this problem. Please help me 
Half as far as it would if all the mass were hanging from the (massless) spring.
With a massive spring of weight w and length L, the force at the center of the spring = w/2. For each small (unstretched) length increment dL going up from the center, force F = w/2+w*dL/L, and going down from the center, F = w/2-w*dL/L. These two forces sum to w/2. So the average force over the spring length is w/2.

A World Exclusive in Weight Loss – The Shake ‘n’ Slim (Pat Pending)
It was the spring of 2007, I’d really started to pile on the pounds and I was determined to do something about it. Then it occurred to me that if I could come up with a new weight loss product not only could I lose weight but also make some money in the process. After some long and careful thought I came up with a product that I would later name The Shake ‘n’ Slim and it was based loosely on the principle of those vibrating slimming machines that were very popular in the ‘70s.
I would take two wooden boards about a foot square and attach a spring to each of them. I would then attach one spring to the floor and the other to the ceiling. The next step was to take two old leather belts and strap my feet to the board attached to the floor and my head to the board attached to the ceiling using the belt as a chinstrap.
To get things started I would bounce up and down until momentum took over and then I could just stand there effortlessly while the springs did all the work. I was sure that half an hour or so of being violently shaken would burn off hundreds if not thousands of calories.
I had the boards and belts but I needed two sturdy springs so I strode purposefully outside and jacked up the front of my wife’s car. The suspension springs would suit my needs perfectly. I set up The Shake ‘n’ Slim in the living room as described above and began to bounce up and down. It worked perfectly and I was vibrating away quite happily until disaster struck.
My chinstrap snapped and I was hurled forwards, with my feet still firmly attached to the bottom board, face first through the new coffee table sending shards of razor sharp glass in all directions. I was then immediately propelled backwards with such force that when I smashed the back of my head into the living room door it became firmly embedded.
With my head stuck in the door I couldn’t bend forward to release my feet so I called to my wife for help who in turn called for the fire department. I don’t mind telling you that my wife was not at all happy with the situation. The guys from the fire department seemed more than a little amused though.
I saw this as a minor setback and I was convinced that The Shake ‘n’ Slim would help overweight people around the globe and make my fortune. I set about writing up a business plan and arranged a meeting with the local bank manager. Later, in the bank manager’s office I explained to him the key features and benefits of The Shake ‘n’ Slim and asked him for a large sum of money for research, development and marketing.
The bank manager raised his head and stared at me for a moment. He then said that my idea was absolutely preposterous and even if it wasn’t he wouldn’t lend me any money because I didn’t have an account with them. He then questioned my sanity and proceeded to call for security. Two burly gentlemen swiftly arrived on the scene, removed me from my chair and threw me out onto the street.
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and The Shake ‘n’ Slim has kind of been left on the backburner. My wife left me in the summer of 2007 and to this day I’ve never been able to understand why. Maybe you don’t have to go to the extremes that I did. There are a lot of great weight loss products already on the market and these include natural appetite suppressants such as Caralluma Burn
