With production, is genre even a solid word anymore?
Because anyone with knowledge on how to play a MPC/MPD, Midi-Keyboard, Turntables, sample/knowledge of playing instruments, etc... Can make ANY genre of music really. Not just hip hop, it can be anything, weather it be jazz, rock, blues, contemporary classical, etc...
So when producing genre isn't a solid word, is it? You don't have to be hip hop, you don't have to be [insert genre here], you can be any type of genre. Opinions on this? Agree? Disagree? I want to hear your opinion.
@54: You inspired this kind of though, you said on one of my latter production questions that rock producers do nothing really other than editing, so I'm saying what if all producers created all their music using MPC/MPD, Midi-Keyboards, etc...Would producing a certain genre be a word anymore? I'm saying they're sticking to the key elements (today wise) of hip hop but creating a mixture of different genres. It's hard to explain, I hope you're getting this.
There have always been producers for other genres (i.e. pop). Nothing has changed.
Producing was never strictly a hip hop thing, its just that the hip hop community was the only one which glorified its producers.

Well rock producers is another story. They are basically just editing. But producers who make beats (like hip hop production) has always been around in other genres. R&B superstars often have producers who make the background music by sampling exactly like a hip hop producer. Pop artists have producers make the background music by sampling often instead of having a band back them up with real instruments. It's been that way for quite some time now. That's why it doesn't sound awkward when a hip hop producer (Dj Premier) comes in and makes music for Limp Biskit or D'Angelo, or Christina Aguilera (he has worked with all of those people). Rock producers on the other hand, at least the old school rock producers are not making beats like some of these other genres use. They are basically just editing it like I said in the other Q.
