Whia is everything today made out of crap?
I am totally fed up with the overall, shockingly low quality of domestic goods. My neighbor bought a Chinese-made (they are ALL Chinese-made, I'm told) food mixer and it fell apart after two weeks. My grandma's Sunbeam mixer from the thirties still runs fine. A friend bought a stereo that broke down completely after three months. My Fisher stereo from 1968 still plays like new. I have all vintage. American-made appliances, and I have no trouble with them.Everyone I know that has purchased new appliances has a horror story to tell. Why do we put up with this Chinese-made, totally worthless stuff?
Because we live in a 'fun-saver' society where cheap is the name of the game (that's my opinion). I think the best thing to do, is do exactly what you are doing - reuse! There is nothing wrong with buying (and maybe fixing if need be) old appliances. It decreases the amount of crap going into our landfills! Maybe you can suggest that to your friends who are buying these disposable appliances. Also, I think people were more careful with their money in the past so there was more demand for high quality items - they would spend the money on something good rather than something convenient and cheap because they didn't have the disposable income that we have nowadays and so they needed things to LAST a lifetime. More people need to demand such items and it'll change.
You know the crazy thing - in Japan (where a friend of mine was teaching english), the make cars to last 5 years - and then they junk them. The idea is to not make it last as long as possible but to have new new new whenever possible. So sad!

Vintage Road Bike Unknown Maker?
i bought a vintage road bike off of craigslist here in Denver. i ride it to work every day but i wanna know what i have. there arent any markings on it that i can see. all i found was a serial number on the bottom of the frame. its SC5JEC22
can you help me? ive searched the internet and the closest i came up with was a supernova or a gary fisher. but gary fisher didnt make road bikes....

It could be a coincidence, but check the link for a posting in bikeforums. The color looks right. Seems like a mid-range 80's sport touring bike. Gotta love the lugged frame.
