Question about Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with Choirs. ?
I have a CD from RCA Victrola that is the 1812 Overture. I know, everyone has herd it but this recording is with a Choirs and until I bought this over 15 years ago I never herd of there being a Choirs written for the 1812. Today I still know nothing of the history of this choirs addition and why most of the time it is not recorded. Some of the history I would like to know is, did Tchaikovsky write this addition of the choirs or did someone else? I f so, who wrote it and why? Also, is my New Philharmonia Orchestra recording the only one or are there others out there? Any other history on this more unknown recording would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Tchaikovsky made use of several familiar tunes when he composed his 1812 Overture, including a Russian Orthodox hymn ("God Preserve Thy People"), which is heard at the beginning, and "Bozhe, Tsarya khrani!" (God Save the Tsar). Both tunes reappear in the finale of the piece.
Igor Buketoff (1915-2001) created an arrangement of 1812 Overture sometime around 1960, in which he incorporated choral forces to sing the words to these tunes. So, we hear the opening sung a cappella (instead of being played by the strings, per Tchaikovsky's score), and the addition of the choir in the finale.
