The Making Of A Name: The Motorola Story At A Glance
Motorola is one of the world leaders in electronic systems and wireless communications. It was founded as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation by brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin in 1928 in Chicago. Its modern brand name was first introduced in a low-cost automobile radio in 1930. The company soon branched out into manufacturing home radios, phonographs, police transmitters and receivers, two-way radios and, in 1947, its first television set.
Birth of the world-renowned brand name
The 30's decade saw the boom in radio sales as this was the cheapest form of entertainment and information during those early days when communication was still in its infancy. In 1930, the Galvin Manufacturing Corp. introduced its car radio which became immensely popular in terms of sales. This provided the general public the enjoyment of listening to their favourite radio programmes when traveling.
Due to their car radio's popularity, Paul Galvin decided to give it a memorable name. Since the famous brands in those days ended with the then-popular suffix "ola", such as Victrola, Shinola and Crayola, Galvin combined "motor" (motorcar) and "ola" (which connoted sound) and created the name Motorola. The name is meant to suggest sound in motion. This brand name became a popular household word that, in 1947, the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation was renamed after its low-cost car radio.
From car radios to mobile phones
This company anticipated the huge demand for transistors in the future. They became a leading transistor manufacturer after receiving a licence for transistor design from Bell Laboratories in 1958. This technology soon paved the way for microprocessor development which the company sold to computer manufacturers in 1974.
The company went on to partner with Apple Computer and IBM in 1993 to develop and market the first RISC (reduced instruction set computer) chip to consumers. This company, however, gained more success as a manufacturer of embedded microprocessors which are nearly always present in household appliances, video game consoles, pagers, and mobile personal computers.
This company is also a pioneer in the research and development of mobile phone systems. After sustaining financial during the late 1990's and the early 2000's, the company sold its semiconductor division of its business to focus on mobile phones and networking equipment.
Product divisions
Currently, the Motorola company operates three product divisions in its business.
The Enterprise Mobility Solutions is located in Schaumburg, Illinois and is responsible for communications focused on public safety and government sectors as well as the enterprise mobility business. The company also provides voice and data communications systems and products, advanced data capture, digital and analog two-way radio, mobile computing and wireless infrastructure to customers throughout the world.
The Home & Networks Mobility division is headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania and manufactures high-end systems that provide continuous access to information, communication services and digital entertainment through wired and wireless media.
The Mobile Devices division is also headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois and is the least profitable division of the company at present. The products include mobile and wireless systems, Bluetooth accessories as well as integrated applications.
