Touchscreen-only - Samsung i8910 HD vs Toshiba TG01
First up, there's the Samsung i8910 HD, and it has one big advantage over the TG01. Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Combine that with the sumptuous 3.7 inch screen, and a huge 8Gb of internal memory, and it's very clear that the Samsung i8910 HD is the one to go for if you want the best camera phone.
While the i8910 HD has the camera, though, the Toshiba TG01 has the power advantage, as it's the first phone to use a super-fast 1GHz processor. Yes, it really is laptop-fast, and it's also taken the crown from the Touch HD, as the screen on the Toshiba TG01 measures a whopping 4.1 inches. If Windows Mobile needs a fast processor and a big screen to run at its best, then surely the Toshiba TG01 must be the single greatest Windows Mobile phone yet made.
QWERTY keyboard - Nokia N97 vs HTC Touch Pro2
With the Nokia 5800 all set to deliver touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that opens up a massive gap at the very top-end of the product range; well, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone on its way to fill that gap: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and packages it inside the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it has a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, as should be glaringly obvious, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as powerful as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you have an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is simply incredible.
So, with the touchscreen only battle won by the Toshiba TG01 over the Samsung i8910 HD, can the QWERTY Windows phone beat the N97? The HTC Touch Pro2 carries on the groundwork laid down by the HTC Diamond2; it really is a joy to use, and like an increasing number of modern touchscreen mobile phones, it's optimised for touch controls. Or, in other words, you press the screen on the HTC Touch Pro2 with a finger, not a dibber (well, ok, a stylus, but dibber sounds better, to me). Specs-wise, it's no slouch, either, with 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, WiFi, built-in GPS and a frankly brilliant slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It truly is a gorgeous mobile phone, and I'll be frank, it's hard to think of any other Windows Mobile phone coming close to it. Just as the Toshiba TG01 beat the i8910 HD, the HTC Touch Pro2 has beat the Nokia N97.
