Usb Turntable Connection
Turntable to convert LP albums to cd?
I have decided to convert all my old LP vinyl albums to CD and have read how to do it. My question is: I need to buy a turntable, should it have a USB connection or is just going through my sound card with RCA connectors the best way?
Any advise on turntable selection?

The USB turntable sounds like a good idea. It would make it simpler! But I have a lot of 78 records that I wanted to do also, and none of the USB turntables I've ever seen are 4-speed.
You can buy a 'traditional' turntable pretty cheap on EBay, especially if you're patient and wait for a good deal to turn up. That's what I did, and I even found an extra cartridge with a 78rpm needle to cover all the bases.
Some of these old turntables are extra-special quality, I mean high-end stereo gear of the 70s and 80s. They are better than a USB turntable in terms of sound quality. T
The 'traditional turntable' approach requires a pre-amp. You can use an old stereo with a line-out, or you can buy a little pre-amp built just for the purpose. Radio Shack has them for like $20, and for $50 you can buy a better one.
You might also like to have audio-editing software that can filter out the clicks and scratches and surface noise. I use Adobe Audition (aka Cool Edit Pro) and it does a wonderful job at this! (But it takes a while, maybe 1 hr to do a whole album). But there's a freeware program called Audacity that also works pretty well. Even albums that aren't in the best shape, like one you'd buy at a used record store, come out sounding pretty good!
One more thing. I have seen stereos in places like the Sharper Image catalog that look like an old-fashioned radio-phonograph from the 30s or 40s. Some of these have a turntable and a CD player, and now there are some that have CD burners and can be used as a stand-alone device to transfer from vinyl to CD. I wouldn't get one of these because you can't edit and 'clean' the audio, but it looks like a very convenient solution for someone who has a lot of vinyl albums and just wants to put them on CDs!
