What and where to buy a turntable that will play 78 rpm records?
Looking to buy a turntable capable of playing 78 records and also one I can plug into a surround sound system. Older turntables seem a bit of a liability, and some new ones cost a fortune.
There are plenty of USB ones around (I don't want to rip vinyl, but they have the 78 speed) but I get the impression the sound quality won't be that good.
I don't want to spend more than £150. What and where can you suggest?
Your price is a bit of a limiting factor, since you'll have to buy a cartridge out of that budget too unless the one that comes with the turntable has a 78 stylus available as an optional extra.
One worth looking at is the Project Debut range, one model of which comes with an electronic "speed box" that has 78 speed. (There is a USB version, but it costs a fair bit extra and you don't need that.) The cartridge that comes with the turntable is (last time I looked) an Ortofon OM5E (the "concorde" style cartridge), and there is a 78 stylus available for this called simply the Stylus 78.
The Project Debut is a proper hi-fi turntable and is a belt driven model. If you prefer a Technics style DJ type turntable with direct drive and removable headshell, there are various ones with 78 speed around the £150 price point but they tend to be a bit plasticky. If you go for one of these, get one with a traditional S-shaped tonearm, NOT the "stubby straight" arm which is useful only for turntablism ("scratching") rather than actually playing records.
You will also need to buy a cartridge - an excellent cheap option is the Stanton 500 series, which has a 78 stylus available for it as an optional extra. Although it's quite an old cartridge now (the first models appeared in the 1960s, and the design has changed very little since) it has an excellent pedigree, and both it and its styluses are very cheap compared with alternatives.
One thing worth mentioning about DJ turntables is that they often turn up "barely used" in pawn shops like Cash Converters. The only downside is that DJ tables are generally sold in pairs, and the shops may not be willing to split the pair! I use a Citronic PD-45 (rrp £250) for 78s myself, with a Stanton 500 cartridge (which it came with) and 78 stylus, and if you can get one of these in nearly new condition for less than £150 it's a steal in my opinion. It sounds great and unlike some DJ decks it is engineered like a battleship.
If you ONLY want to play 78s and don't care about 33/45 vinyl, then I think Rega sells a 78 version of their P2 model that is set up (with a Rega 78 cartridge) to play 78s right out of the box. Again it's a belt-drive, proper hi-fi turntable and is somewhat more expensive than the Project Debut series.
Whatever turntable you get, make sure it has the traditional "half-inch" mount on the tonearm, where the cartridge is held in place by two screws on the top of the headshell. If the turntable uses a push-in type cartridge (called "P-mount" or "T4P") it's much harder to find a suitable replacement cartridge, and there are none that I know of that can take a 78 stylus. (The exception being Ortofon's OMP range which I don't think they make any more.)
Most hi-fi amplifier systems today (including surround sound systems) don't have built-in preamplifiers for turntables, so you will have to buy one separately unless your turntable has one built in (some of the Project Debut models have one). Project make some pretty decent standalone preamplifiers.
Whatever you do, don't plug your turntable (unless it has a built-in preamplifier) directly into an input on an amplifier designed for a CD player or tape player, it will sound very quiet and totally awful. You HAVE to feed the signal through a pre-amplifier first.
I mentioned above that you have to have a 78 stylus to play 78s. You may know this already but NEVER use a stylus designed for 33/45 vinyl to play 78s - the sound quality will be horrible (very distorted) and it could damage both the records and the stylus.
Remember to set the tracking weight correctly as well. Less than 2 grams is typical for 33/45 vinyl, but some 78 styluses need 5 grams or more to track correctly.
Lastly, 78s were produced from the 1890s right up to 1960 in Britain and there is enormous variation in sound quality. Later 78s (those from the 40s and 50s) can sound amazing, whereas those from the early era were recorded acoustically and can sound a bit primitive on modern equipment.
I agree with b's answer in that old pre-war 78s can sound really good on an authentic old gramophone too (DON'T play post-war 78s on a gramophone though, they weren't designed for that). Unfortunately most of the gramophones you see in junk shops are crappy fake reproductions from the 1970s and 1980s that will ruin your records and sound terrible (google "crap-o-phone"), and genuine ones in any kind of working order tend to cost an arm and a leg - certainly a LOT more than £150!
