How do I use an automatic return turntable?
I just received a used Kenwood automatic return turntable. I'd really like to use it, but I don't know how. Having grown up with the ipod, I know absolutely nothing about how to use it, including, but not limited to
- how do I turn it on?
- what do I connect it to?
- how do I use it?
- does it only play a specifically formatted record?
Basically, if you could tell me everything you know about it in the simplest terms, I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks so much!
Check to see that it has a cartridge and stylus, these are located at the end of the tonearm, which is the part that swings out over the record. It should have a headshell which has a little prong sticking out to the right in order to pick it up with your finger. the cartridge is the playback device and is mounted with some small screws in the headshell which is attached to the tonearm with a little collar that turns and locks it into place. If these parts are present, look at the bottom front of the cartridge, it should have a small needle sticking out, be careful with this, it is very delicate.
If it has all these pieces and the turntable turns when you turn the switch on (this should be on the top right hand side near the front and of course you will need to plug it into the wall outlet)) or you may need to pick up the tonearm and move it over as if you were going to play a record to get the turntable to turn. You will need an amplifier of some sort with a phono preamp(this is a special kind of amplifier used only for phonographs, unfortunately modern stereos don't often have them). It will play any kind of record that it has speeds for, usually at least 33 1/3(albums) and 45 rpm(singles) and some turntables will play 78 rpm records made in the 1930's and before; somewhere on the top there should be a speed selector switch. All full length record albums made since about 1945 run at 33 1/3 rpm.
All you do is put the record on the turntable, turn it on and move the tonearm over to the outside edge of the record and set it down on the vinyl. The cool thing is that with a good cartridge and stylus, they sound great and you can buy records at thrift stores for 50 cents. There are many cartridges and stylii still being made, the stylus is usually replaceable because they wear out. It would be a good idea to look in your local area for a store that specializes in records and turntables, at least a DJ store(DJ's still use vinyl records), where someone with some experience can look at your stuff and help you out. It's well worth the effort to set up and play a turntable but if you don't know anything about it, it's a lot to convey in a post like this.
