Turntable Tone Do vinyl records truly wear out from playing them?
I realize that if you don't take care of something that they simply do not last, and I am sure the same is with vinyl records. I mean obviously if you purposely scratch a record, or mishandle them. Your record collection will be worn out, and be of no enjoyable use to you!!
However, I want to get everyone's view as to if vinyl records wear out from just playing them, and if so why do they wear out?? Can this be prevented, or will anyone's precious record collection eventually wear out regardless of how well you take care of them, or how how often you play them??
Has anyone actually had a record wear out by playing them on an excellent turntable set-up with a lightweight tone arm of 2 grams, or less?? Let me know what you think about this. Thanks!! I would like to know.
I genuinely believe that vinyl that is produced nowadays is a lot more durable than many people make out. I've had my fair share of accidents with vinyl, from scratches through to one melting, but I've never heard of a record simply wearing out. A friend of mine is a turntablist (scratch DJ). He often uses vinyl that are called battle weapons which are essentially interesting sounds that sound good when you manipulate the record back and forth by hand. Some of those individual sounds must have been played tens of thousands of times and as you can imagine, the tone arm is set to it's heaviest weight. None of these records have ever worn out.
The only vinyl that I can't account for is older vinyl. I'm not sure if the production quality was as good a long time ago as it is now, but I can't see it being that much difference. But in any case, your records are probably safe, even if you play them ten times a day for fifty years.
