Getting into electronic music? Sampling? etc?
I've been wanting to get into electronic music. I've been a musician all my life and have experimented with some home amateur recording. I feel fairly proficient in my recording skills but have no idea how to get started in the electronic/techno field. I'm also wanting to learn how to record a random sound and assign it to a keyboard, or even to some kind of digital turntable device so I can mix and scratch it. (I guess this is what 'sampling' is.) But where do I get started? What kind of equipment to I need? Thanks!
So, there is a lot of stuff out there that gives you absolute control of every element of your music.
You need some decent software, some recording equipment or midi-mic inputs for your instruments
I discovered Ableton Live awhile ago (2009!) and was just amazed at how easy it looked. This video introduction to Ableton Live shows off some of the software's capabilities. I recommend checking out some of their other videos to get your creative juices flowing.
The Akai APC40 Abelton Controller is what the guy uses in the video and apparently it comes with the Ableton software and plugs into your computer via USB for MAC and Windows. You can pretty much plug in midi and record while you play.

The best software for mac users is Logic Studio

This guy does some great youtube vids with Logic Studio
Another piece of software out there is M-Audio

And you can plug in and record everything through their M-Audio hardware, which is also compatible with Mac's Garage band.

A Youtube review of the hardware
Anyways, this should at least give you some ideas to follow to make some cool tracks.

Ortofon Scratch Twin Pack Turntable Cartridge $234.99 The Ortofon Scratch was designed together with DJ's for scratch and back cueing. The rubber suspension is especially developed for scratch and back cueing. This turntable cartridge uses a spherical diamond and achieves a high output (7.0 mV).Several Ortofon technologies make it possible to realize high sound quality and low record wear at the high tracking forces that are necessary in disco environments. DJ's all over the world claim very high demands to their DJ professional equipment, among which the cartridges plays their decisive part by realizing that scratching, back-cueing, and live artistic performance are a big part of the show. Reliability and robustness is vital, when these replacement cartridges night after night will have to withstand these demands in environments with extreme sound pressure and vibration.Scratching and back-cueing impose heavy mechanical stress on the cantilever and its rubber bearing. Therefore, the Ortofon cartridges are equipped with cantilevers made from aluminum tube with increased wall thickness. Special attention has also been paid to the attachment of the bearing and the design of the bearing itself. This means that rough treatment will neither damage the Ortofon cartridge nor degrade its stability. For easier cueing, the nose of all the Ortofon cartridges have an extra large cutout which makes the stylus freely visible from above, and further, the tip of the cantilever is fluorescent.2 Ortofon Scratch turntable cartridges |
