What kind of cable do I need to hook up my turntable to a pre amp?
I have a second hand professional turntable with only one output saying 'beat output' which just needs a regular RCA cable I think. Which makes me wonder, don't they normally come in pairs? like red and white? I know these things have to get hooked up to a mixer, but can't you just hook it to a pre-amp and then to a power amp? What should I do? What kind of cable do I need. Like one leading to two? And how necessary is a a pre amp anyway?
A pre-amp is built-in. An amp is not. You don't need both.

How do i connect RCA cables to old floor speakers?
I have a turntable that i am trying to connect to old floor speakers. I have the turntable connected to a mixer, which has rca (red and white) outputs as the picture shows: http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1010546mu3.jpg
I am trying to connect to some old floor speakers that have inputs in which you wrap some wire around and then screw them in, as the following two pictures show:

if anyone has ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. we tried cutting the leads off one end and stripping down to bare wires but it didnt work.
thanks for the response, but what about the red/white connections? are those all good?
the red and white wires are for the left and right speakers.
Each wire should have two bare wires within it when stripped back. One wire comes from the centre pin of the rca lead, the other from the sheath, the little metal bit around the end.
So if you cut one end of the rca cord off, identify the two wires inside either the red or white cord, and then connect these two wires to the speaker, then it should work in theory.
However I beleive that RCA power output is very low, ie not designed to run speakers, but rather designed just to carry the signal to a device, and then be amped up by the circuitry in another device. Hence this will most likely not work, and you will likely need to run RCA -> amp and then amp -> speaker.
