Turntable Preamp How can I tell if my record player has a built in preamp?
I bought a little turntable online recently, and some speakers from the Goodwill. I tested the speakers and they work, but they didn't work with the record player. I've been searching around on the internet trying to see whether I should buy a preamp I have my eye on. But I don't want to buy it if I don't need it. How can I tell if I already have a preamp? And would the speakers work if I bought a preamp?
If the speakers were powered like computer speakers or something and your turntable had a built-in phono-preamp, it would work. If that's what you have going on and it's not working, a phono preamp should fix you right up. A phono preamp brings the turntable's output up to standard line level that will work with CD, AUX, tape, computer, etc... inputs.
Other than that, a phono preamp won't drive passive speakers with no amplification. You'd need a receiver or something to power your passive speakers. You could play it safe and get something with a "phono" input in case your table doesn't have a built in phono preamp. Also, unless the turntable is a newish model, it's very unlikely it has a built-in phono preamp.
