She places one of them on an old record player turntable and sets the angular speed at 33.3 rpm.
(a) What is their angular speed in rad/s?

microwave ovens: does it matter if you raise the food to be heated from the turntable?
I thought that if you put the food on a raised platform then it would heat more evenly because the microwaves could penetrate the food from all directions, whereas if it sat directly on the turntable the bottom of the food would not be exposed to as much of the radiation. However, my explanation has been challenged and I wondered if anyone can provide a scientific reference to resolve this one way or the other. thanks!
Miccrowave ovens wwork by the energy directly acting on the water molecles. The resonating chamber is optimized for best energy transfer at the turn table level. Since the vibration of the molecule is directly contrlolled, it does not matter in which direction the energy enters.
It should be remembered that the depth of penetration in liquid water is about 5 cms. If the food kept is deeper than this, the lower parts may not see the energy.
Do a trial. Keep watter in a compatible container on the turntable. Note the temperature. Heat for three minutes, stir and note the temperature.
Repeat with another lot of same quantity of water, but with the container kept elevated by 5 cms.
See if there is a difference in the rise of temperature in the two cases.
