Turntable Pioneer Needle

turntable issue- song getting stuck?

I got a Pioneer PLX100 for Christmas and after finally getting it hooked up, I tried playing some records. They are brand new and they play fine for about a song or so (different every time) when it seems to get stuck and just repeats the same portion of the song. The record continues to turn and the needle doesn't appear to be doing anything different. Also, I have tried adding weight to the arm which has not helped. I don't know a whole lot about record players, and I don't have a manual for it. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what a PLX100 looks like...

If you're able to set the stylus pressure and anti-skate, make sure those are set correctly for the cartridge.

Is the stylus new? Never trust the stylus on a used table.

It does sound like your tonearm is probably binding though. This could be due to the tonearm bearings being damaged or simply adjusted too tight. It could also be caused by a mechanism inside an automatic turntable sticking (common). There are parts that move with the tonearm to trigger the automatic shutoff function at the end of a record. Some hardened grease or parts out of adjustment will cause problems there. Also, some turntables have power switches triggered by the tonearm being moved over the record. If the switch is out of adjustment, that can also cause binding of the tonearm.
