I have read that a manual turntable is better to have than an automatic turntable?? Why would this be??
If you're gonna DJ, I remember someone telling me "direct-drive" was the only way to go.

I recently found a turntable (Garrard model 1211 semi-automatic turntable). How do I get it to work?
If I swing the arm, the record will start to spin....but lowering the needle onto the record automatically sends the arm towards the center of the record. When the arm does that, it lifts up returns to its resting place and shuts off everytime. Is the turntable broken? Where can I go to get an instruction manual or help with the matter?
You need to balance the tonearm with the weight at the back end of the arm so it has enough weight on the needle to track the grooves in the record, if there isn't enough weight the arm just skates across the record.when you balance though don't put to much weight on the needle because you'll trash the records by wearing them out
prematurely, just keep adjusting the weight until it stops skating.
