What entry-level equipment should I buy to get started with vinyl-controlled DJing on my computer?
I've been DJing with one of those all-in-one computer control decks for about a year now, (The Numark Omni Control if you're wondering) and I want the make the transition to a vinyl control system. (Those jogwheels don't feel the same when it comes to scratching)
What should I be looking for in terms of affordable entry-level equipment? I'd need two turntables plus the vinyl control system (Serato is the most popular, but is pretty expensive).
Serato is expensive and popular, but it's for a good reason. It's definitely worth spending the money on.
As for turntables, you have to go with direct drives if you're wanting to make the transition to scratching. Belt drives just don't do the job properly. New Technics are expensive, but you can get used ones pretty cheap. It doesn't really matter what version or how old they are. They're bulletproof and last a lifetime as long as you don't spill anything on them. Have a scout around on Ebay. You can pick up perfectly good ones for between £100 - 150 each.
One more consideration to make is a mixer. The Numark Omni Control looks like a perfectly feasible mixer, but I don't know what inputs and outputs it has at the back. You would need to connect your decks to the box you get with Serato (or any other vinyl control system) and then plug that box into the back of your mixer. You may need more inputs than you currently have. It's just a thought.
