Using Turntable with Bose Wave?

I want to get a turntable, but all I have is the Bose Wave CD player/radio. It has 2 aux inputs on the back (I have the CD changer version). I've been reading a lot about preamps and line levels and phono jacks, etc. I just want to know what I should expect if I get a new turntable, or find an old one I like better. For example, if I get an old one, what would I need to buy in order to use it correctly hooked up to my Bose? Thanks.

Turntables are great; i have one (Audio Technica PL120), which is new and yet has great quality. If you want a new turntable, you have a choice between a turntable with a built in preamp, or you can buy a preamp seperatelly. Some turnttables, like mine, have an option to select if you want to use the built in preamp or use an external one.

A Preamp basically takes the signal from the turntable and multiplies it so it can be hear on your stereo/receiver. All you need for an external preamp is two RCA red/white cables, one going from the turntable to the Preamp and another from the Preamp to the Stereo, in this case the Bose Wave.

Now, if you get an old used turntable, an it is more than 20 year old, it won't probably have a preamp, since back then, records were a major music medium and so receivers/stereos had an input labeled "phono," which included a preamp. Yet, some old turntables have preamps, it all depends on the make and model.

Another thing to consider is the output from the turntable. It should be a standar RCA white/red cable. Be carefull because some (very) old turntables have a different output, due to the standards back then, that will not fit with your AUX input on the Bose.
