Turntable Levelers

I'm about to take the Wilton Cake Decorating course 1 at Joanns. Any suggestions?

I'm taking the course in March and all the Wilton brand products are so expensive. I'm looking at probably $100 just to start the course. Any money saving tips?? I've already bought the student kit for $25 and it doesn't even include everything on the supply list. Seems like the class is a good way for Joanns, Hobby Lobby, etc to make some money! I'm trying to buy the majority of supplies at WalMart but there selection is limited.

here's just a few of the supplies needed:
8 ct icing color set
15" parchment paper triangles
Cake boards
trim and turn turntable
cake leveler
tool caddy
disposable bags
featherweight bags
and the list goes on....

I took all of the Wilton classes and loved them!! I now decorate cakes in my spare time.
Some things I did to save money: I did not bother to get the parchment paper triangles. Unless you are very old school you will never use them. The cake boards you can cut out of cardboard if you have good size boxes available to you. I did not get a turntable until several months after the class. you can get away without it but it makes things much easier! The cake leveler is a life saver! The tool caddy you can use a new tackle box instead. Disposable bags are what I use for regular icing. I use the featherweight bags when I am piping chocolate(featherweight bags are thicker and the chocolate stays cooler and thus stiffer for application). Hopefully you will have an instructor like I did who gave us tips on how to spend less at least until you know you want to invest in more stuff.
