Turntable Knobs I bought a turntable. Do I have to buy a reciever as well?
I tried plugging it into my surround sound dvd player but it didnt work. There was also no grounding knob on the dvd hometheater amplifier. Do they still make recievers with the grounding knobs?
A turntable requires a phono preamplifier which one amplifies the signal from the cartridge which is a very low level signal, and it must also re-equalize the signal back to a flat responce. All records are cut with the bass information reduced and high frequency's boosted, as a cartridge cannot track a full bandwidth bass signal also if you recorded a full bandwidth signal onto a record it would take up much more space on a record reducing the amount of music you could put onto a record.
So a phono-stage boost the signal of the cartridge and re-equalizes the signal to a flat responce.
This can be a out-board phono-stage with you can add to a receiver or some have them build in. It must also match with the type of phono cartridge being used.
