Rotational Motion - Kinetic Energy - Moment of Inertia Problem?
You need to design an industrial turntable that is 60 cm in diameter and has a kinetic energy of 0.250 J when turning 45 rpm (rev/min).
a) What must be the moment of inertia of the turntable about the rotation axis?
b) If your workshop makes this turntable in the shape of a uniform solid disk, what must be the mass?

I think starting with b first is the way to go, assuming that the given kinetic energy is rotational, you have:
KE(r) = 0.5Iω²
The moment of inertia (I) for a uniform solid disk is 0.5mr², so:
KE(r) = 0.5(0.5mr²)ω²
KE(r) = 0.25mr²ω²
m = KE(r) / 0.25r²ω²
= 0.250J / [0.25(0.300m)²(4.71rad/s)²
= 0.501kg
a) We already know the equation for I for this turntable, so I around it's axis of rotation is:
I = 0.5mr²
= 0.5(0.501kg)(0.300m)²
= 0.0225kg ∙ m²
There may be a better way, but the results look good. Hope this helps.

You need to design an industrial turntable that is 41.0 cm in diameter and has a kinetic energy of 0.270 J when turning at 37.0 rpm (rev/min).
1) What must be the moment of inertia of the turntable about the rotation axis?
2) If your workshop makes this turntable in the shape of a uniform solid disk, what must be its mass?
I have no clue how to do this. Thanks in advance for any help.
1) table will entail rotational kinetic energy = 0.5 I w^2 = 0.27
w = ang speed = 37 rev/min = 37*2*3.14 / 60 [rad/s]
w = 3.873 rad/s
I = permissible moment of inertia = 0.54/w^2
I = 0.036 kg.m^2

0.036 = (1/2) m * [0.41/2]^2
m = mass = 1.713 kg
