Turntable Home Stereo Systems
Where do you find advice or reviews on stereo systems?
I'm getting tired of the quality of music on my iPod speaker system and computer and want to get a shelf system(?) stereo with a turntable. I'm not an audiophile freak but would like a nice system that has good sound and comes in a single package if possible. I've not been able to find reviews or information about this after searching about. Anyone have suggestions about where to look? I'm not looking to hook this up to my TV for home theater system, just for music and radio. And not looking to get a lecture about the quality of sound, blah, blah, blah. I heard enough of that from my brother in law.
I would just check out some systems on sites that have consumer reviews. You can usually get a pretty good idea about the quality of a product judging by the general consensus of the consumer reviews.
My advice would be to stay away from anything with a built-in turntable. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no such decent product out there at this time. They sound bad, are built poorly (many complaints of premature failure for most units out there), the turntable will probably not even run at the correct speed and it will eat your records over time. I would go with a shelf system or powerful boombox that has an audio input and a separate turntable of decent quality.
Sony seems to be making the best sounding shelf systems at reasonable prices right now. The $174.00 model looks most interesting to me. It has an audio input that could be used for a turntable. It's available in-store at Wal-Mart, so you could go listen to it. I wouldn't go overboard on something with a multi-disc changer, etc... Those are usually the first parts to break, and then you're left with an expensive, partially functioning unit. That's one problem with all-in-one systems. You can't just replace one component if there's a problem. So, I would never spend a ridiculous amount of money on something like that because it may need to be replaced in a few years. As you know, getting something repaired these days often costs more than replacing the item.

To that, I would add the direct-drive Audio Technica turntable. At around $200.00, it's the least expensive table out there with good speed stability, a decent cartridge with elliptical stylus and a good tonearm with no "play" in the bearings. Anything cheaper will not sound near as good and you'd be better off sticking to CDs. You'd get poor speed stability, a cheap cartridge with conical stylus prone to tracking distortion and a limited frequency-range, etc... Vinyl is not worth doing unless you do it right. Cds will sound far better than vinyl played on a crap table. Resist the urge to buy a $100.00 turntable, even if you have to wait and save up for awhile. It will be worth it.

It's definitely ugly, but I have the smaller model and it sounds pretty good. Definitly better than one of those underpowered all-in-one units with the turntable would sound. I have a nice system in the living room and nice Monsoon flat-panel 2.1 computer speakers in the bedroom, so I was really just looking for something I could take places. I didn't go for the big daddy model because it seemed too big for my needs. But, I sometimes regret not getting it for $20.00 more. Bet it sounds pretty sweet for a boombox.
