Turntable Cd Player Do I need a special type of amplifier for a turntable?
I want to get into vinyl, so I dug up an old turntable. Problem is I don't have a proper amp for it. When I connect it to anything I have, (Mostly auxiliary inputs on CD players and other sound devices) it comes in very soft. I know I need a proper amplifier, but I don't know where to start.
Can I use any amp with it or are there special turntable amps that I need to get?
Boomer got it 90% right. But, the correct term for what you need is a phono preamplifier or phono stage. The phono stage not only boosts the output from the magnetic cartridge on your turntable, it also reverses the RIAA equalization used when cutting records. Some receivers still have a built-in phono stage and an input marked "phono". If not, you need an outboard phono stage to enable using any standard line level input (CD, DVD, tape, aux, etc...).
Phono preamps come at all different price levels. The cheapest ones tend to have some hum and noise in the background, so it pays to spend a litle more if you can. The more expensive stuff will have more accurate RIAA equalization and better parts quality for better sound. What price-range you should be looking in mostly depends on the quality of your turntable cartridge and sound system... if you think you'd hear the difference or not...
One thing that may help you... Modern cartridges tend to sound best with a phono stage that has 100pf to 150pf capacitance loading at the inputs. Older cartridges from the '80s often sound better with more capacitance (200pf or more). The capacitance loading specs are usually shown for better quality phono stages.
The TC-750 from Phonopreamps.com has nice sound and 220pf capacitance loading that might be better for an older cartridge. They also have a decent less expensive model...

The ART DJ is also very nice sounding. The basic model has 100pf and 200pf capacitance choices. There is also a model with 150pf capacitance and a USB output for transfering vinyl to digital on a computer with a poor sound card or laptop with no stereo line-in jack. My friend has the one with the USB out and it sounds excellent, as do the digital recordings he makes using it with his laptop.
