Turntable Cd Cassette Players Trying to "pimp out" an old console stereo...?
I became interested in my grandma's old 1974 RCA Console Stereo. I had a crazy Idear in my head. I wanna pimp it out. Well I've ran into some problems, The turntable never worked, Ive replaced alot of stuff in it, and it still didn't work. So i removed it and threw it away. So I want a new turntable that could fit in it, A regular cassette deck that could replace the 8-track player, Never worked either, NOW I want a cassette deck that the tape slides into horizontally, and I want to install it thru the 8-track player flap. I drilled holes in the record holding compartment, and screwed in a CD ROM player with buttons on the front of it haha. Can anyone tell me where i can get parts for this thing, like an identical turntable or just one that i could just screw in, or cassette deck like this, and possibly some LED lights for it lol?
Thanks,
John.
I've thought about doing this myself but I already have too many projects and too many piles of speakers and other audio equipment. Why a cassette player? The time is coming when cassettes will be next to impossible to buy. I'd go with a CD player. CDs show no sign of extinction despite what the MP3 supporters say. As far an identical turntable or an exact replacement; The original turntables that came with those things were crap, simply put. What I'd do is get a turntable with a spring loaded base, (a vintage Thorens, Philips or BSR for example) remove the case and fit it to the console. A direct drive turntable with a platter rigidly mounted to the base would feed back through the console's case. Either that or I'd forget about the turntable completely as any turntable is going to feed back when mounted in the same case as the speakers if you get it loud enough. I'd also pull out the other electronics, amplifiers and such, and fit in a modern stereo receiver, an Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer, Marantz, etc, being sure to give it plenty of ventilation - possibly rigging a fan. I'd ditch the old speakers, reinforce the parts of the case that serve as speaker enclosures and do a computer alignment with new woofers and tweeters. One thing that I'd be sure to do is a good job with the woodwork, using a router to make the cutouts and possibly refinishing the case. The woodwork on those old, 70s console stereos was sometimes quite good and I wouldn't want to cobble it up. That's what I'd do. I have a shop full of cabinetry tools and the speaker design software and experience to do it correctly. As for LED lights, well maybe to illuminate the interior where the components are but nothing flashy like a jukebox. That may be where you and I diverge.
