Can I use a 2.1 surround system as an amp for turntables?

I got a turntable today and i don't have an amp so i can't plug speakers into it. I've been told that I can get a surround sound system and the sub-woofer will act as an amp. I found a 2.1 system for £20 in argos, do you think this would be ok?

The first thing you will need is a pre-amplifier designed for use with a pickup/turntable. The output of this is then connected to a normal audio amplifier - which could be a surround sound system but you won't get the surround sound, just stereo.

The output from a pick up cartridge is very small and needs to be amplified to what is called "line level".

There are one or two kits available, sorry I don't remember where, and Maplin sells one at £25, their Phono Pre-Amplifier, code QM51F.

The £20 system from Argos is likely to disappoint you once you have got over the initial novelty of having your turntable working.

You would be much better off looking for a decent amplifier on ebay (it will have a "phono" input so you won't need a separate pre-amplifier). You will also need 'speakers. Again, you can get some bargains on ebay. You really need to spend rather more than 20 quid, but you should be able to get an amplifier for not much more than £20 and 'speakers for perhaps a little more. The results will be much better than the Argos junk would give you.

By the way, a sub-woofer is a low frequency loudspeaker. Some of them are passive, i.e. they don't have an in-built amplifier,and some of them are active, i.e. they do have their own in-built amplifier. Since they are designed to reproduce only the lowest of frequencies from any system they are quite unsuitable for a general amplifier/loudspeaker.
