I'm going to purchase a turntable tomorrow and one of the tables that I'm interested in has built-in pre-amp.
Ahh yesteryear. Phono sections as they were called are the "phono inputs" of older stereo / hifi equipment. They were needed b/c the input from the phono cartriges on turntables was so faint they needed a LOT more amplification than other inputs such as tapes or "aux". Somewhere on the order of 1000x more amplification. And it wasn't just straight amplification but one with a EQ curve. So if you get a turntable with this built in, it will allow you to use a "modern" receiver or preamp that likely omits the outdated "phono section" inputs and use regular inputs.

How to set up a turntable?
I was thinking about buying a turntable on eBay. It says there's a pre-amp. Does this mean you still need an amp? If you do, how do connect everything to get it all working?

If it has a pre-amp, you just connect that to a line in on a stereo or your computer.
