What is the difference between music loops and break beats?

this might be a stupid question, but I know that break beat is a technique invented by DJ Kool Herc to extend the break of a song through repetition, and a loop is a part of a track that is repeated continuously. They sound like they might as well be the same thing, in which case Kool Herc didn't really 'invent' anything, and just discovered loops can be made on the turntables; so I want to know if there is any real difference between the two, besides the fact that break beats were on the turntables? Thanks in advance!
