What reprisals might our imperial masters inflict on Britain...?

...if a British government actually carried out the wishes of a large majority of the people, and withdrew British forces from Afghanistan - and would you still give Washington a two fingered salute and bring our soldiers home?

NB, the enemy has a long track record of trying to bring us to heel - they halted all aid as soon as we elected a Labour government in 1945, betrayed us over Suez, and conducted economic warfare against us when the Wilson government resisted US bullying and refused to commit British troops to their Vietnam disaster.

The way the UK economy is, Brown might end up going cap in hand to the IMF or World Bank, both of which are run by the US, for the US. I can't imagine we'd get any preferential treatment. The USA still owes Vietnam billions of dollars in unpaid dues which were negotiated as part of the ceasefire. I wonder what their chances of seeing that money are?

Having gotten country out of his system with Almost Blue, Elvis Costello returned to pop music with Imperial Bedroom -- and it was pop in the classic, Tin Pan Alley sense. Costello chose to hire Geoff Emerick, who engineered all of the Beatles' most ambitious records, to produce Imperial Bedroom, which indicates what it sounds like -- it's traditional pop with a post-Sgt. Pepper production. Essentially, the songs on Imperial Bedroom are an extension of Costello's jazz and pop infatuations on Trust. Costello's music is complex and intricate, yet it flows so smoothly, it's easy to miss the bitter, brutal lyrics. The interweaving layers of "Beyond Belief" and the whirlwind intro are the most overtly dark sounds on the record, with most of the album given over to the orchestrated, melancholy torch songs and pop singles. Never once do Costello & the Attractions deliver a rock & roll song -- the album is all about sonic detail, from the accordion on "The Long Honeymoon" to the lilting strings on "Town Cryer." Of course, the detail and the ornate arrangements immediately peg Imperial Bedroom as Costello's most ambitious album, but that doesn't mean it's his absolute masterpiece. Imperial Bedroom remains one of Costello's essential records because it is the culmination of his ambitions and desires -- it's where he proves that he can play with the big boys, both as a songwriter and a record-maker. It may not have been a commercial blockbuster, but it certainly earned the respect of legions of musicians and critics who would have previously disdained such a punk rocker. And, perhaps, that's also the reason that he abandoned this immaculately crafted style of work on his next album, Punch the Clock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Bruce Thomas - Guitar (Bass), Bass; Elvis Costello - Guitar, Vocals; Steve Nieve - Organ, Piano

This account of the horrific treatment of Kikuyu people in a prison-camp system established by the British colonial rulers in 1950`s Kenya lays bare a long-suppressed chapter in the history of atrocity. Harvard historian Caroline Elkins researched the extant official documents (many were destroyed in 1963 as the British departed from Kenya). She also interviewed detainees who survived, as well as guards and others. Her eye-opening book tells how tens of thousands of people were brutalized in the name of civilization, while the world remained unaware. The Mau Mau uprising was portrayed as a threat to innocent British farmers, government workers, and their families, as well as a threat to British rule, and so a state of emergency was declared. Elkins reveals that the British magnified the threat and manufactured, for the general public, a picture of the Mau Maus as savages. Using this as justification, the British military moved large numbers of Kikuyu into prison camps, where they suffered harsh conditions, disease, brutality, torture, collective punishment, forced labor, electrocution, rape, and hangings. For the record, Elkins explicitly recounts the degrading and sadistic torture and mutilations--many of a sexual nature--perpetrated by the British. Offering a lesson in how colonial power worked in 1950`s Kenya, Caroline Elkins`s book resonates with disturbing relevance to present times.

Longest confirmed distance one shot one kill by a sniper with a 50 cal?

Anyone who can confirm that Canadian Forces snipers in Afghanistan have made world record long distance kills , with Barrett 50 caliber rifles, out to 2450 metres ? Thats over a mile and a half in the Imperial measurement system..

Six of them were awarded US bronze Stars for their shooting, in support of US Green Berets in 2002 ?

Anyone confirm this ?

Jim B.

Yep, its true. August 7, 2002; A Canadian sniper in Afghanistan has been confirmed as hitting an enemy soldier at a range of 2,310 meters, the longest recorded and confirmed sniper shot in history. The previous record of 2,250 meters was set by US Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam in 1967. The Canadian sniper was at an altitude of 8,500 feet and the target, across a valley, was at 9,000 feet. Canadian sniper units often operated in support of US infantry units, which were grateful for their help. The record lasted only one day, until a second Canadian sniper hit an enemy soldier at 2,400 meters. The Canadian snipers were firing special ..50-caliber McMillan tactical rifles, which are bolt-action weapons with five-round magazines. The Canadian snipers were the only Canadian troops operating without helmets or flak jackets as they had too much other equipment to carry. Each three-man team had one sniper rifle, three standard rifles (Canadian C7s), one of them with a 203mm grenade launcher.
