Are there any laws pertaining to DJs and music broadcasting at convention events?
If I want to have an event where money is being made (a convention, if you will) and I want to have a dance there, is there any law against me plugging in my laptop to the sound system and playing off of my playlists? Do I have to hire a DJ/are there certain laws/royalties DJs follow which make them necessary for such an event?

I am not an expert or a lawyer but I do know that there are laws that require a royalty payment for music played in environments like you are describing. You best bet would be to contact one of the musicians rights organizations like ASCAP or BMI.

How To Love Your Wedding Dj

Another topic to discuss with your DJ is “audience requests”. Do you want him to readily take and play them or would you rather that he stick to what you've agreed upon prior to the reception? Again, if you have an experienced DJ you should leave much of that to him. There is a balance when accepting requests. The DJ's job as the “music ambassador” is to play as many requests as possible while still maintaining the over flow and integrity of the reception.
Make sure you have these discussions with your DJ well before your wedding date to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Your DJ should listen to your requests, but should also give you professional advice when needed.
