newbie to record player cartridges/styluses- few questions?
i just bought an old record player from the thrift store (or rescued if you prefer), and i have no idea how to set up the tone arm. the arm itself it totally bare, no needle, no stylus, no cartridge, just a bare arm. the player is a garrard zero 92, (it think).
i need to know the difference between a cartridge, a stylus, and if the needle comes with either of the parts, or if i have to buy it separately.
also, what kind do i buy? i have no idea what i'm doing.
The parts that connect up to a tone arm are the head shell, which contains the cartridge, which contains the needle (stylus). Headshells and cartridges are made by a variety of manufacturers, and they're standard (interchangeable) for any stereo turntable. A particular cartridge needs a particular stylus, though. This is sold as a replacement part, because the needle can wear out many times during the lifetime of the cartridge.
Once you get the cartridge attached to the headshell with the mounting screws on the top, and the wires all connected from the cartridge to the headshell, you just slip the headshell onto the end of the tonearm and turn the locking nut to secure it. These are also sold as premounted cartridges, which is convenient. But, now you have to adjust the stylus pressure and anti-skating for the tonearm.
The stylus pressure is how much weight the tonearm puts on the needle as it contacts the record. Too much and it damages the grooves in the record (and probably the needle assembly as well) not enough and it won't track the groove properly. Basically you need to balance the tonearm out by sliding the counterweight on the back of it until the needle just floats about an inch off the turntable. Then you adjust the dial on the counterweight to the correct pressure for the cartridge (usually 1.75 to 2 grams).
Anti-skating is how much lateral pressure the tonearm is putting on the cartridge. As the needle tracks the groove, it's drawn to the center of the record by the fact that the groove spirals in toward the center of the record. So, you want to have a slight amount of pressure on the outside of the tonearm pushing the needle toward the center of the record. Otherwise, the groove wall itself has to do this and you end up tearing up the outer side of the groove wall. Plus the needle will be susceptible to skipping. The anti-skating adjustment is usually a little dial on the tonearm support mechanism. And, the anti-skating force is usually just set to the same setting as the stylus pressure.
