Strobe Stroboscopic
Systematic or random error?
A stroboscopic photograph is taken of a ball in free fall, in which the spacing between successive images increases, indicating downward acceleration. The images are counted, and using the period of the strobe (.05s), the number of images, and the time, the acceleration of gravity is determined. However, the theoretical distance that the ball falls in the first .05s is roughly between a third and a fourth of the ball's diameter. If a possible source of error is to lose the first image, would this be a statistic or a systematic error?
(It seems like human error to me, but I don't think that's a proper answer for a lab.. You could take averages of several photographs - which seems a bit like random error - or, since the first image will always fall the same distance and the significance of it can be estimated, it seems like systematic error..)
A systemic error is some problem in the way data is collected. A random error is based on events in the system being measured. Loss of an image, setting the image count off, is an error in your measurement system, and is a systemic error. If the force of gravity had a random component, that would be a random error.
