What is your arm position suppose to be when taking blood pressure bent or straight?
I have a fairly large arm (bicep) but noticed that my blood pressure is alot higher when my elbow is bent when taking blood pressure compared to if I hold it straight at heart level. What's the proper reading?
Held straight at heart level while sitting down and relaxed with resting heart rate.

Lengthening the Muscles of Your Upper Arm
Many people are fond of watching those big muscled boxers on the television as they strike their opponent with such heavy and knockout punches. These athletes have worked so hard to keep their muscles strong especially in extending their elbows powerfully so that they could lessen strain and pain. They have exerted much effort in lengthening and strengthening their muscles at the back of their arms, the so called triceps brachii muscle.
The triceps muscle is the only muscle fleshing out the posterior humerus. Its three heads arise from the shoulder girdle and proximal humerus, and it inserts into the olecranon process of the ulna. Being the powerful prime mover of elbow extension, it is the antagonist of the biceps brachii which is the most familiar muscle of the forearm that bulges when the elbow is flexed and is the prime mover of the elbow flexion. The triceps muscle is often called the “boxer’s” muscle because it is the muscle that delivers a straight-arm knockout punch. This article doesn’t advocate that only boxers or those who desire to be one could only take on the exercise but for those who would want to develop their greater potential in keeping those upper arm muscles strong.
Here are some ways on how to stretch of one’s triceps muscle or lengthening the muscles of your upper arm.
1.Start by holding one end of a towel with your right hand.
2. Raise your right arm and bend it so as to drape towel down your back. Just keep your right arm in this position and continue holding onto the towel draping at your back.
3. Reach behind your lower back and then you grasp the bottom end of the towel with your left hand.
4. Climb your left hand progressively up higher of the towel as your right arm is also pulled down. You continue climbing your left hand up higher until your left hand touches your right, or if you can’t put them together as close, just as you can comfortably do.
1.Do the same exercise in the reverse position.
2.Repeat this 3 to 5 times every session. Hold the hands that touched together and allow them to stretch for 10 to 30 seconds.
This exercise focuses on the extension of one’s upper arm and improving one’s capacity to stretch. Keeping these muscles strong would entail a good movement of one’s elbow. You can now stretch out those muscles with less strain and less pain. You can do those heavy punches here and there with less pain.
