Hi, I just bought a turntable, a Stanton T.62. I've never had a turntable before, never owned a record until now, I have absolutely no experience. I'm having a little trouble with it. It may be that it's kind of a dj turntable but I would assume it would work the same if I wanted to use it as just a playback turntable. So, on the back there are inputs for the standard white and red cables that I plugged directly into my speakers to my turntable and sound comes out. However, the volume doesn't go that high on my speakers even with the knob all the way up. When my speakers are on my computer they are reeeaally loud, I've never had to even go halfway on the knob, so something is definitely different. Also, when a record is playing, it's kind of crackly sounding, especially when someone is singing. Please any info. or advice would be appreciated, thanks!
Ok, so I need an amplifier, would a mixer work as an amplifier?
You really just need a separate phono preamplifier. You could also use an inexpensive DJ mixer with phono inputs, but that would be unnecessary if you're not mixing anything. A phono preamp also reverses the RIAA equalization curve records are cut with, so you can't just use anything you think will boost the level, it has to be a phono preamp or something with a phono input.
There are many separate phono preamps (phono stages) on the market in all price ranges. The cheapest ones tend to have some hum in the background and are best avoided. You can get something a little nicer than that with pretty good sound for around $50.00. As the prices get higher, RIAA equalization gets more accurate with more complex circuits and better quality parts are used for smoother, more "open" sound.
The ART DJ phono preamp and the Phonopreamps.com TC-750 are both well-reviewed and good-sounding for around $50.00.

The Behringer would probably be your safest bet if you can't spend $50.00. It doesn't seem to hum for most people. Although, some have had problems...
