Sony Record Turntables
Automatic turntable won't stop spinning?
I have a Sony PS-lX4. It's an automatic turntable so obviously once the record has finished the arm returns to it's starting position and the turntable slows to a halt.
For some reason the other day, the record had finished, the arm had returned to the side but the turntable continued spinning and wouldn't stop (so I had to turn it off the plug).
I powered it back up a while later and the turntable started spinning again even though the arm was in the start position.
So basically the thing will carry on spinning until I unplug the record player.
Does anyone know what's gone wrong and how I can fix it? It still plays records but there's obviously something wrong with it otherwise it would stop spinning.
Any help would be much appreciated =)
Under the turntable, there is a switch that gets triggered when the tone arm returns to the resting position. This switch is obviously not doing it's job.
I don't know exactly what this switch looks like on your turntable, but it is probably a micro-switch that gets hit by something close to the pivot point of the tonearm.
Unless it's a standard micro-switch - which I doubt, knowing SONY - it won't be easy to find an exact replacement.
If you are good with electronics - or know someone who is, you might be able to remove the switch and disassemble it to see why it has failed, then try to repair the failed part.
I've seen some turntables where the switch is actually an Infrared LED and light sensor arrangement. When the tone-arm returns to the resting position, the light sensor is triggered, and that sends a signal to an electronic circuit to shut down the motor. But this is more the exception than the rule.
There is also the remote possibility that the part of the tone arm pivot that actuates the switch may have become worn, in which case you just might be able to jury-rig a fix.
Good luck... and continue to enjoy your vinyl. I have a belt-drive Technics that I still use, mostly to digitize my vinyl collection onto CD. Sweet....
