Gjf Seeks Review Of The Changes In Dtc Proposals

The All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) has urged the Ministry of Finance to review the changes suggested in the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) proposals, with a view to protect the interests of SME as well as big jewellers in the sector. “Some of the proposed changes in the DTC would adversely impact the small-scale gems and jewellery units. Therefore, it is necessary for the Finance Ministry to consider its suggestions on DTC for the greater benefit of the sector,” said Vijay Soni, proprietor of Mahabir Jewellers, a mid-sized wholesaler of gold, kundan jadau and diamond jewellery in Kolkata. The Federation engaged in jewellery trade in India recently made a representation to the Finance Ministry, urging it to exclude provisions such as tax levy based on value of assets, levy of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on all payments for supply of goods and seizure of stock in trade. “Given that SME-dominated gems and jewellery sector operates on thin margins with high inventory levels, imposition of 2% tax on gross assets and seizure of entire stock in trade would cause disruption in the business activity of many small units, thereby hampering the growth of the sector,” said B Bhattar, director of Bhattar & Sons, a small-sized jewellery store in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. GJF is also opposed to 10% tax deduction on all payments made for gold, diamond and jewellery, stating that such a proposal would obstruct the working capital flow for the industry, which is already facing a major liquidity crunch.
