Why do my speakers hum?
My setup is:
(2) Technics SL-1200 turntable
Technics SA-200 receiver
(2) Sherwood S-1860 speaker
Vestax PC-17A mixer
Audiopipe 12 AWG speaker wire
Shure M97xE cartridge (& N97 stylus)
I hook one (phono) turntable up to my mixer, and from my mixer (line) to my receiver through the AUX inputs. I then attach both ends of the speaker wire to the receiver and speakers.
Are my speakers supposed to hum like this? Whether playing or not playing my records, the speakers will hum. Is this supposed to happen?
One possibility is the speaker cables are running too near the mains cabling. Where possible, you should have a gap of 2 feet between the mains and speaker wires. If speaker wires run near mains cables, try to cross them at 90 degrees to reduce the length where the mains is interfering with the speaker cables.
It is also worth checking that the earth is connected in the plugs of all your hi-fi appliances.
