Royal Marines Commando for an Aussie?
Hi, I am very interested in one day joining the RMC of Britain, I was just wondering how accessible this option is for an Australian and how many "foreigners" they take from commonwealth countries each year, thanks.
PS. I have thought about Australian Special Forces (turns out its not my piece of cake) and serving my own country but we lack a non-special forces "elite basic infantry unit" (Clearance Divers aside) commando unit (I have heard many stories of Australian infantry being a boring job with little room for specialisation).
Yes, Australian (or any Commonwealth country citizen for that matter) are eligible to apply for the British Army or the Royal Marines. Like enlisting here, it's not a case of walking through a recruiting office and being on the bus to a training unit the next day - you'll need to find a place to stay and someone to sponsor you for what could potentially be several months. Not particularly difficult, and a fair number of Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans join their ranks every year.
You've heard wrong about the Australian infantry. You can indeed specialize with enough experience - Signals, Recon, Sniper, Direct Fire Support, Mortars, Assault Pioneer and Logistics. Besides the SASR, we have two Commando Regiments (although you stand little chance of getting in without prior service). Men of the Royal Australian Regiment have yomped dozens of kilometers a day through the jungles of Timor in response to contacts and fought and bled in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They're not basic infantry, and competition is get into the limited places in the Regiment is very fierce. Contrary to common perceptions, our best applicants and recruits get into the combat arms - those who struggle past the interviews and tests are only going to get offered non-combat support jobs.
