when will north american semi trucks catch up with the rest of the world?
I have to agree with the other people who answered this question.... On what point do we need to catch up???
I started driving trucks in the US in 1978.... No power steering, 3.5 MPG, 55 mph... No frills... No nothing.... Just get in and beat yourself up for 10 hours at a time.
In the last 30 years, here are some of the things US truck manufacturers have added to the industry... Engine exhaust emissions that are probably 85-90 cleaner running than their counterparts of years ago. Fuel economy has doubled in the last 15 years... show me a auto manufacturer that has retained the same size vehicle and doubled it's fuel economy while increasing horsepower output by 50-75%.
As far as "Catching Up"... Freightliner has been owned by Mercedes Benz since 1983 and they have one of the most technilogically advanced vehicles on the highways... anywhere (The Cascadia). Traction control, ABS, Computer controlled engines, automatic transmissions, etc.... Who or what exactly do "we" need to catch up with? Scania??? Please keep your cabovers in Europe.
Volvo came to this country and provided a product that fit the needs of the North American continent. Besides Mercedes Benz, I haven't seen any other company willing to put that kind of capital and resources into making a viable product that would have a market share in the US.
You need to do some research into the trucking industry in North America before you start spouting your retoric regarding that we need to catch up. Either that or clarify what and where we need to do this.
