Record Turntable Belts
Help me with my record player/turntable?
So I recently purchased a turntable from a yardsale.. I really NEED to play some records .. the play button won't stay down, it's missing its belt, and I was told the thing wouldn't turn (I assume the motor isn't working, I guess) ... any tips on how to instruct one with the parts, or make the parts work?

Also, I don't have speakers - I should be able to play it through the TV though, with the audio jacks, right? Thanks!

Of course the platter won't turn if there's no drive belt. The motor may be working and all you need is the belt. The platter probably needs to be turning for the auto functions and buttons to work. I wouldn't worry about that yet. If there's a problem, it's just dried grease 99% of the time and cleaning and lubricating will fix it right up.
If you have the model number of the turntable, you can usually find a belt online. Several dealers have excellent databases of what belts fit what tables. Many of them overcharge for that knowledge. You can by a belt by size cheaper. For that, you'd have to get a non-stretchy string or wire around the drive path, measure that, then subtract some length for a little belt tension. There are a couple dealers that will tell you the size of the belt they sell you by model number. You could use that info to maybe find the belt cheaper elsewhere.
You will need a phono preamp to plug the turntable into any standard line-level input. Otherwise, you'd need a receiver with an input specifically marked "phono".
