Record Player Receiver

Hooking up a record player to a receiver?
I'm having troubles hooking up an old record player to a receiver.
I bought Sony STR-DE575 receiver from a pawn shop today. I'm not sure whether I'm hooking it wrong, or whether the receiver doesn't work. Help!
if the receiver does not have a phono input you will only get very low audio if you use any other input.the output from a turntable is very weak and it needs to have a preamp to work, this is what the phono input does

Mp3 Player - 9 Tips for Selecting the Right One for You
The vast array of portable MP3 players on offer can seem a bit bewildering, so that it's difficult to know where to start when deciding what to buy. However, by following a few simple steps, it is easy to select the right one for your needs.
1. Flash memory or hard disk?
An MP3 that uses a hard disk memory can have some advantages, such as being able to store a large quantity of sound files but it has moving parts which can cause the music to skip if there is sudden movement. So If you are going to be using the player when jogging or doing other kinds of exercise, it is probably best to use one that utilizes a flash memory storage.
2. Choose the extras that are right for you.
By shopping around you will see that MP3 players come with all different varieties of extras, such as high-quality headphones, armband, or a clip to hang it on your belt. Often these are free additions. It is worth waiting until you have looked at a few possibilities before making your choice.
3. Find the right additional features.
Some portable MP3 players, but not all, have additional features, including FM recorder, stopwatch, voice recorder and others. Take some time to think of which of these might be useful to you, and which would be a waste of time. In this way you will ensure that you get the right model for your requirements.
4. Decide if you want a display screen or not.
A display is useful when you want to select your songs, because you can then see the artist name, or album or category of music, and it also allows you to select a particular song rather than having to select at random. The display is useful too, when you are using it as a radio station receiver. However, the display screen brings with it some cost implications, and it also affects battery time.
5. It's best to have radio.
Most people prefer to have the option of FM radio, as there are times when we do not feel like selecting a track, or we have some things to do, or we are in the middle of some exercise or activity where it's not easy to keep stopping. At these times we would rather have someone else do the selecting! The extra radio does not necessarily push the price up, so again it's worth looking at several different models before making your mind up.
6. Size matters.
When choosing your player, you should take the memory capacity into account. A rough guide is that a player with 128 Mb (megabytes) of memory will be able to store around 60 songs. This may seem like a lot of songs, but experience has shown that it's better to have more than that. So 512 Mb will allow around 250 songs and 1 Gb (gigabyte) can store over 500. This number should be ample for your needs, but, as always, the increased memory comes with an increased price.
7. Find out about the batteries.
Portable MP3 players use many different kinds of battery. You need to find out if the batteries are cheap and easily available. In addition, you need to ask about the battery time. As a rough guide, you should get about 6-8 hours playing time. An LCD display screen will use up more power than a player without a screen, and if you watch a video on your player, the battery will drain faster.
8. Voice recording and ease of reading.
Decide if you want to use voice recording. Some players have an inbuilt voice recorder, but if they do not, they should have an external microphone connection. You can buy a microphone to go with your player quite cheaply. If there is a display screen, is it easy to read? It's worth checking this because if it's difficult to read it can be rather irritating. Sometimes the player has a backlight on the screen to help in bad lighting situations.
9. Shop around for music providers.
Once you have your player, it's a good idea to look at various different online stores in order to collect your tracks. There are mant different stores operating right now, many of them offering attractive discounts and special offers. Some of them specialize in music that is a bit more off the beaten track. And some of them offer the chance to download an unlimited number of tracks in return for a monthly subscription. For example, Napster is one of these.
To sum up, there are many different varieties of portable MP3 player, so it is worth spending some time finding the one that suits you.
