Receiver Turntable Input
If I have a relatively new receiver do I need an amplifier to use a turntable?
At the risk of being torn apart by those in the know, I need some help with a relatively basic audio electronics question.
I'm having trouble optimizing the sound out of my turntable. I was always used to the set-up at my parents growing up and now that I'm trying to get my own deal working it doesn't sound the same. I've read on other posts that I need a phono jack, a pre-amp, or an amplifier, Then again, maybe a combination of the three.
My question is, If I have a decent receiver made in the past several years does it already come with a pre-amp and amplifier built in (no phono input)? If not, how do I complete my system so I can tap into these records?

I don't know what turntable you have, so I'll just have to try and explain the whole thing and hope I can do it in a way that's easy to understand.
A turntable needs a phono preamp to bring the signal up to normal line-level like a CD player or tape deck puts out. The phono preamp also reverses the RIAA EQ curve records are recorded with.
Some newer tables have a built-in phono preamp, so all you would have to do is plug it into any line-level audio input (CD, tape, DVD, aux, etc...). Some receivers (rarer now) have a built-in phono preamp and an input marked "phono". A turntable with no built-in phono preamp would have to be plugged into an input marked "phono" or run through a separate phono preamp. A decent sounding separate phono preamp costs around $50.00. You could get away with spending less if your system isn't the greatest, but some of the cheaper phono preamps can cause some hum in the background.

The TC-750 from Phonopreamps.com sounds very nice. They also have some cheaper models I'd probably trust more than cheapies from other sources...

What are the ports on the back of a Technics SL-BD1, or why isn't my turntable louder?
Specifically, what is the port next to the left and right inputs. my turntable is very quiet and it wasn't always like this. i think maybe i'm missing something for that port? i used to be able to crank tunes off this turntable. now when i have the volume all the way up sound does come from the speakers, but it is very quiet. i've read about preamps, but do i need one? i didn't before. i am recently bought a new receiver, a pioneer VSX-819H and got my turntable out of storage(4 years) and sadly, it just isn't loud enough.
The problem is your new receiver doesn't have a built-in phono preamp and an input marked "phono".
You'll need to buy a separate phono preamp, so you can use any standard line-level input on your receiver. (CD, tape, AUX, DVD, etc...)
The turntable should connect with 2 RCA plugs and usually a ground wire. They will be connected to terminals on the separate phono preamp.
As far as phono preamps go... The TC-750 from Phonopreamps.com sounds very good for around $50.00. They also have a cheaper model that I'd probably trust more than an even cheaper model from a different source. Some of the "cheapies" out there are terrible and tend to have hum in the background...

They also sell a model with a USB output if that's something you'd be interested in... Good for transfering vinyl to digital for CDs or mp3 using a computer with no line-in jack on the sound card. A USB interface wouldn't be necessary if your computer has a line-in jack. Mic jack won't work well because it's mono.
