Rca PreAmp Turntable
Best turntable for 50-80?
I'm starting to get into LPs, I need a turntable with a built-in preamp since my sound system only has RCA jacks. USB jack to copy onto my computer isn't necessary but would be a nice bonus, my main concern is sound quality.

In order to get a turntable that really sounds better than CDs, you'd have to spend at least $200.00 on the Audio Technica direct-drive that comes with a decent cartridge and elliptical stylus. Even then, you'd probably want to upgrade the cartridge eventually and probably use a better sounding separate phono preamp instead of the built-in one for better bass weight and dynamics.
Anything that sells for less than that comes with a cheap cartridge and conical stylus that will be prone to tracking distortion and a limited frequency range. The speed stability will be bad... light plastic parts prone to a "plasticy sounding" resonance... there will be some "play" in the tonearm bearings and a cartridge upgrade wouldn't be worthwhile. A more revealing cartridge would sound harsh and "clanky" on a table like that.
I love the sound of vinyl and I'm certainly not knocking it. I'm just telling you the truth that CDs sound better than vinyl played on a cheap table like that. These cheap tables have become a fad and are an extremely poor investment today when we have the CD format available to us for less cash. There's just no reason to buy a cheap table. It's not like in the old days if you had a low budget and no other format choices. Buying a decent table to experience sound smoother and more detailed than CD is another story... and for being able to listen to original releases of older recordings that haven't been remastered or otherwise screwed with... I'm all for that. I know you don't want to hear it, but I would save my money a little longer and get something worthwhile. Even the Audio Technica doesn't match the specs of the average table in the '70s and '80s, but it's pretty close in quality. The Technics SL-1200MKII has excellent specs and build quality, but the price is up over $600.00 now it seems (no cartridge included). I was lucky to grab one of the last few sold when the going rate was $400.00.

Will a preamp allow us to connect our turntable to our new tv?
My husband has a turntable with rca cables that hooked up just fine to our old tv so we didn't need a receiver. We just purchased a new fancy flat screen, and can't get the turntable to successfully play. We have tried hooking it up to all aux ports, to no avail. If we get a preamp, could that fix the problem, or will have to give in and buy a sound system? We would really like to get it to play on one of the tvs aux ports....thanks! any suggestions?
