Un55B8000 Samsung : Mind Blowing And More Superlatives Than You Can Shake A Stick At!
The technical specs are already posted so I'll cut straight to the chase. This TV is beautiful, a real work of art if you don't mind it dominating your living room that is. Unless you live somewhere the size of Chatsworth House it will do just that, dominate. However it is so beautiful to look at that you won't mind and every time you pass through the room it reminds you of the jaw dropping experiences you will have when you finally have time to sit down and put on a blu-ray disc (BD).
All that is before we even switch it on! So, you probably gathered I am going to say this is good, but even after seeing it in the store I was surprised at the image quality when playing the first BD I could put my hands on which happened to be the new Star Trek movie (XI I think). On the standard setting the picture is crisp and clear, bright enough even in the daylight and on 1080p just what you'd always hoped for. Bringing up the menus there is a plethora of options to control all kinds of functions such as Dynamic contrast, amount of black, smoothing, cool tones, digital noise reduction, the usual sharpness, contrast, brightness and colour etc.
The four presets are good and the standard one is probably best for everyday viewing. After setting the picture to my taste which includes standard preset with 9 gamma, 100Hz smoothing set to smooth, colour to cool, sharpness to 80, contrast to 90, colour to 60, brightness at 50, the Enterprise has never looked so good. The smoothing works brilliantly, as the camera pans around the deck of the ship under attack by Eric Bana AKA Nero, only the actors are being shaken and thrown around the TV is utterly composed and is so convincingly real it's like you are there on the set, I'm not exaggerating here, there is something that the smoothing does to make every motion shot strangely almost too real and I found myself rewinding just to watch the effect again.
It is utterly compelling, I never thought a TV image could look so good, how can it be improved and yet I know that even as I type higher resolution sets and broadcast standards are being discussed and implemented and with 3D sets on sale now who knows what it's going to be like in 10 years. But for now this is about as good as it's going to get.
Cons: Well there are a couple, the main one being the sound which is at best average and at worst quite tinny, my previous 42 inch Samsung plasma which is 6 years old has far superior audio. However as we only ever bother watching movies through the cinema sound system this doesn't matter to us and the sound quality is fine enough for the news and the garbage that the females in our house like to watch (especially the teenager!).
The other point to note is that the viewing angle makes a difference to the blacks, to get pure black, and believe me it is inky, you need to be in front of the set, from the side it loses a lot of it's striking image and contrast, although in a dark room this is not so noticable, here though the plasma sets will always win the argument. However, this TV swivels on it's stand so it is possible to turn the set to face you wherever you sit which helps to counter this problem if you are sitting at the side (of course it doesn't help the others in the room , ahh
Other items to mention. The menus are very easy to navigate and the tools shortcut to the most used items is very useful. Connecting the TV to an ethernet cable brings Youtube to your 55 inch and with the tv upscaling the image Yourtube has never looked so good. THere's tons of other internet stuff so if you're on cable internet you'll love this.
Another brilliant function is the connection of an external hard drive via the USB port. We have a 1TB drive with all our movies and photos from the last four years. The TV sorted all the photos into a timeline showing which pictures we'd snapped in November 2006 for example, absolutely brilliant, it's like a new media centre as well as a tv. One thing though it wouldn't play the avi files on my drive, still investigating this because it should play them fine. I'm sure there's loads more but I have to go and do some work to pay off the barclaycard for this monster.
So that's about it, if you like big TVs, you like movies and have the space and the dosh, don't waste you time with anything else, you will not be disappointed.
