Rare Breeds: $8.83 A rare breed is defined as a breed of livestock that is not common in modern agriculture, though it may have been in the past. Various national and international organizations, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, and the Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the United Kingdom, each define the exact parameters by which a breed may be defined as rare, and many breeds that qualify only have a few thousand or even a few hundreds breeding individuals remaining in the world. These organizations promote conservation of heritage livestock for their unique traits, which may contribute to genetic diversity among animals important to human food supplies and economies, as well as to general biodiversity and improvements in animal husbandry. Livestock refers to one or more domesticated animals, raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as food, hair or wool for textiles, or labor. Livestock are raised for subsistence or for profit, and animal husbandry is an important component of modern agriculture, having been practiced in many cultures since mankind first made the important transition from hunter-gathering to farming. At first, promoting the eating of rare-breed livestock may seem like an odd way of conserving them. But unlike wild animals, farm stock has to pay its way or disappear forever from the planet. |

Live & Rare replaces Reagan Youth's first (good but flawed) album as the real document of one of the better-remembered hardcore bands of early-'80s New York. When they were high schoolers, they regrettably didn't have their sh*t together to accept an invitation for the seminal 1981 compilation New York Thrash, as befit their emergence as a beloved group on that genuinely fresh scene. But oddly enough, when Al Pike joined on bass and '60s Who/Jam/Chords fan (such mod leanings were super-rare in N.Y. hardcore!) Steve Weissman took over the drums, they actually became a far more powerful and aggressive unit, twice the previous power. So it matters that Live & Rare is dedicated exclusively to the Pike/Weissman era (a little more than a year) and wisely compiles the best of five 1983 CBGB gigs and a few studio cuts when the band peaked. In contrast to their passable (but not as loud or smashing) studio work, this live stuff smokes as it should from the memory of these hot, sweaty, packed-in, wild, afternoon gigs. This takes you back! Whew! Although you're deprived of the sight of charismatic, hyper-friendly, garrulous, big-eyed, oddly innocent, but somehow also super-intense frontman Dave Insurgent (whose descent into narcotics took the band down, then tragically took his life), his personality still drives this car. Perhaps the anti-system lyrics seem na?ve to the more "why bother" youth of today, but his irrepressible spirit was symptomatic of when everyone believed punk to be the true protest music of its time (and hand in hand, the true hot rock & roll of the period!) in that post-Watergate, Reagan-led era, a position history has validated and vindicated. Reagan Youth weren't the best or the brightest in punk or hardcore, but like the other greats of 1982, they had a certain something -- real belief, real distaste, and real camaraderie -- and with the right band/attack this time, it's exciting once more to hear. ~ Jack Rabid |

Don't Confuse Rare Yugioh Cards for Rare Yugioh Cards
Did I lose you at the title? If you stick with me a little bit, I'll explain. Rarity for yugioh cards is relative. Based on what a card does will actually affect how rare it really becomes in the market. First, there are basically two types of people who buy yugioh cards. The first is the player. Every single time a new yugioh set comes out, a player will go through the yugioh card list for the set and determine which cards will be beneficial to him. The second type is the collector. The collector collects according to his or her preference. Some collectors collect only the rare yugioh cards, while some collect the entire set. I'm a bit of both, I like collecting rare foil yugioh cards and using them to build a deck.
Although both the player and collector can affect the value of any one yugioh card, the player has greater influence on card value of a current tournament legal card. In short, if the card is playable in a tournament, then the player affects the value more than a collector. Another reason collectors don't affect value as much is because they often just buy one copy of a particular yugioh card. Whereas the player will buy multiple copies of a rare yugioh card to complete the deck.
Now, yugioh cards are classified by the manufacturer based on the ratio of each print run and how much of each classification is placed in a single yugioh booster pack. There are eight common cards in every nine-card yugioh booster pack. One of the nine will be a rare. Sometimes, that rare is replaced by a higher rarity kind of card. In yugioh, there are super rare yugioh cards and ultra rare yugioh cards. There is one super rare in every six booster packs and there is one ultra rare in every twelve booster packs. These are just the numbers based on the print run. It doesn't mean that if you buy twelve booster packs, then you're guaranteed an ultra rare yugioh card.
When you're trading your yugioh cards to either complete your collection or your deck, keep this mind. Not all rare, super rare or ultra rare cards are useful to a player. What this means is that the rare cards that don't show up in tournament decks are easier to trade for when you're trading with a player. On the flip side, a rare card that's playable might be easily traded for when you are trading with a collector. The rarity of a yugioh card depends on the trader's perception. Some players even trade away super rare cards to get a few rare cards that they need for their tournament deck. So the next time you're looking to complete your yugioh card collection or tournament deck, find out if the trader is a player or a collector. From there, you'll know the differences between a "rare" yugioh card and a rare yugioh card.
