The Top 20 Paintings of The Vatican

1 Raphael paintings and tapestries

If the Raphael Rooms heave with people, this large gallery in the Pinacoteca is often empty, yet contains three of his key paintings the Madonna of Foligno, a Coronation of the Virgin, and a Transfiguration as well as his tapestries of the lives of St Peter and St Paul.
2 Aldo-Brandini Wedding Fresco

A very rare and beautiful example of an original Roman fresco it's in conservation at the moment. The room where it is displayed is often closed; ask at the downstairs information desk for the latest on visiting times.
3 Horses heads

These serene yet lifelike busts on display in the Etruscan museum date from the second half of the 4th century BC.
4 The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

Remarkably, this was Michelangelo's first attempt at painting. He learnt quickly the central figure of Adam was completed in just four days, God took three. In all it took him from 1508 to 1512 to complete the 300 figures that trace the Biblical history of man before the coming of Christ. There is much controversy, however, over the recent restoration 500 years of dust and grease were cleaned away, and the vibrant colours restored, but how close is the result to Michelangelo's original work?
5 The Last Judgment

Another extraordinary achievement on the grandest of scales. The 2,000-square-foot fresco was begun nearly 25 years after the ceiling, and Michelangelo rode roughshod over the original aesthetic of the chapel by painting over two existing wall paintings. Many believe that the face of the flayed skin held by St Bartolomeo (near Christ's left foot) is a self-portrait.
6 Fra Angelico: Chapel of Nicholas V

These frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St Stephen and St Lawrence with Angelico's inimitable clarity and compassion are currently in restoration, though you may be able to peer in through the doorway to catch a glimpse.
7 Apollo Belvedere

A Roman copy of a Greek bronze; along with the torso (14, below) this was one of one of the most influential antiquities among Renaissance artists, and considered a supreme example of classical sculpture.
8 Porphyry Basin

Dominating the centre of the room, this enormous red-stone basin is some 40ft across. It was recovered from Nero's spectacular Golden House (Domus Aurea) near the Forum.
9 Eagle and Hare Mosaic

A wonderful black-and-white composition from the 2nd-century AD, which is walked over unnoticed by most visitors on their way through to see the sculptures in the Room of the Animals.
10 Laocoon

Another iconic work, this almost pristine marble sculpture depicts in florid, almost baroque style the death agonies of the Trojan priest and his sons who were killed by serpents sent by Athena . Displayed in the Imperial palace in the 1st century AD, it was rediscovered in 1506, identified by Michelangelo, who restored a missing arm, and bought by Pope Julius II. The original arm was found in 1905 and reattached in 1957.
11 Raphael Rooms

Raphael's project to cover the ceilings and walls of four of the Pope's private apartments took him twice as long as Michelangelo's work on the Sistine ceiling (they started at the same time) and Raphael had help from assistants. Perhaps the greatest is the Room of the Segnatura, which includes The School of Athens a homage to the scientific achievements of classical Greece in which Raphael gives Plato the face of Leonardo da Vinci. The backlit St Peter delivered from Prison in the Heliodorus room is also striking.
12 Perseus

Canova was perhaps more at home with erotic female figures than pugilistic men, but his portrayal of this classical hero (from around 1800) is an interesting take on the pose of the Apollo Belvedere on the opposite side of the court.
13 Borgia Apartment Frescoes

These are not as impressive as the Raphael Rooms on the floor above, partly because Pinturicchio's originals were heavily over-painted in the 19th century, partly because they are so badly lit. However, there are still some interesting compositions, especially his St Catherine, in the Room of the Saints.
14 Belvedere Torso

This battered fragment of a twisting, muscular male torso (probably Hercules, because of the lion skin he sits on) dates from the first century BC and was hugely influential during the Renaissance, especially for Michelangelo note the similar pose of Christ in the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.
15 Greek Sculpture

The Gregoriano Profano Museum is currently closed, though it is possible to visit. If you get the chance to look around there are several excellent pieces of highly significant 5th-century BC Greek sculpture, including fragments from the Parthenon sculptures.
16 Leonardo's St Jerome and the Lion

All the more fascinating for being unfinished (the lion is just sketched in). Almost unbelievably the now restored painting was once cut up and the head of St Jerome used to cover a barber's stool.
17 Head of Athena

This long gallery (the Chiaramonti Museum), crammed with marble figures and busts, is bewildering to visit because there are so many sculptures and so little information about them. But this head stands out as unusual in that it still has the eyes in place a rare survivor from antiquity, which gives a much better impression of the original state of these works.
18 Greek Vases

The final rooms of the Etruscan museum have some of the best-displayed, most interesting, yet least visited exhibits of all. The painted scenes tell you more about everyday life at the time than any number of colossal sculptures. Most were found in Etruscan necropolises.
19 Round Room Mosaic

It's easy to be distracted by the colossal statues around this room and the basin at the centre (see number 8), but the ancient floor mosaics from the Otricoli baths are masterpieces of light, shade and colour. They show scenes from the battle between Greeks and centaurs, as well as sea creatures, tritons and nereids (sea nymphs).
20 Mars of Todi

The Etruscan Museum is usually very quiet, yet there are some wonderful exhibits, especially this bronze statue of Mars, missing his helmet but otherwise in fine condition.
