Running an electric guitar pickup through a PA system?
I have an older Taylor 310 with the Fishman Prefix Plus system. I don't like the Piezo, but don't want to modify the guitar, or change the factory electonics in there currently. I play a regular weekly gig with the guitar plugged into a modulated effects chain, then into a house PA system.
I'd like to install Magnetic electric guitar pickup in the sound hole, and blend the signal with the piezo output. Can't find a definitive answer googling on how to accomplish this.
I dont think I can feed the pickup straight into the piezo preamp (the Fishman) as the impedances differ, so I'm thinking of blending the preamped piezo signal with the dry pickup output with a passive blend control. Unfortunaly, the Fishamn doesn't have an Aux In to attach an internal mic/pickup. Is a passive pickup hot enough to go straight into a PA without a preamp? If not, can a pedal such as a chorus work as a preamp? Is there a better homebrew solution I'm not thinking of?
Mutter - I have been a sound guy for 20 years including 5 years as the engineer for a classical guitar group. One of my pet peeves about musicians is that many of them don't believe in the "KISS principle" (keep it simple). I have had many occasions when a musician's overcomplicated setup has messed up the sound and made my job much harder.
Your guitar will probably sound great with only one pickup or the other (my preference is the mag pickup - great sound and much less feedback than the piezo). If you insist on using both, a good way to do this would be to send each output to a small mixer and then the output of the mixer would connect to the outboard effects. You could buy a nice small mixer for less than $100:

Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp 886830181436 $146.03 With the Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp, Electro-Harmonix offers an affordable tube micrphone preamp that won't disappoint. Equipped with a 12AY7 EH tube and a 12AU7 EH driver, it gives microphones the widest dynamic range with the warmest possible tone and accuracy. The 12AY7 Mic Pre uses an actual 200V supply instead of the "faked out" 12 or 48 volts you'd get with common models and delivers 50dB of gain into a high impedance load or 40dB gain into 600 ohms. The 12AY7 Mic Preamp's special FET current-balancing circuit allows the tubes to amplify the microphone signal to line level while eliminating noise and protecting against hum and hostile electrical environments. It has an extra TRS output for separate line control, which can be used as a splitter or an aux send for monitoring. Input connections are balanced in and out (XLR) with a 1/4" TRS balanced buffer out. The Electro-Harmonix mic pre unit also boasts a phase reverse switch and a +4dBm indicator light for setting optimal mic level. The 48V phantom power is soft starting and pop-free. |

Takamine CTP-2 Cool Tube 2 on board tube preamp $276.75 Takamine CTP-2 Cool Tube 2 on board tube preamp The "Cool Tube" preamp introduced at the January 2004 NAMM show in Anaheim, California is the most significant development in "on-board" acoustic signal processing since Takamine presented the Acoustic DSP, the industry's first on-board "digital" acoustic guitar preamplifier in 1998. The Takamine "Cool Tube" preamp is an on-board acoustic- electric preamp that utilizes a 12AU7 dual triode vacuum tube. The "Cool Tube" packs a huge amount of features and amazing tone into a compact package that fits neatly into Takamine's "SoundChoice" docking port. This new "Cool Tube" preamp joins a range of five distinctly different preamps that are all interchangeable, giving the Takamine player several great options to fit their personal style and taste. The "Cool Tube" preamp gets its name from Takamine's unique and new technology that runs the Tube at very low voltages, therefore the tube does not glow or produce high levels of heat. The tube actually runs at only two or three degrees above ambient, so there is no concern over the delicate tone woods being affected by radiant heat. With the Takamine "Cool Tube" preamp, the playing will be hot, the tone will be warm, and the tube always remains cool. Features: Takamine players will find a most useful array of features to enhance their recording or live performance applications: A chromatic tuner available at your fingertips keeps the guitar in tune. The tuner is capable of being calibrated from A438, to A445. An LED display reveals the note being played and directs the player with illuminated arrows that show sharp and flat. The EQ section utilizes a shelving, graphic EQ, which can cut or boost bass and treble frequencies. The mid range is shaped using a semi-parametric EQ section comprised of a rotary knob used to choose the mid point of the midrange frequency. The midrange frequency can be cut or boosted with the mid slider. The range of frequency covered by the rotary knob is 200hz to 8.5Khz. The tonality of the preamp is further enhanced by the use of the rotary knob labeled "Cool Tube" With this control, the player chooses the depth of effect the tube places on the signal generated by the proven Takamine "Palathetic" pickup. With this knob the player can choose from a high degree of "CUT" for aggressive strumming; expanded "sweetness" and harmonic density with fatter lows and rounder highs; or levels of rewarding richness for finger style players. An auxiliary input jack and volume knob, which can control an additional add-on pickup of your choice. This facility can accept a magnetic sound hole pickup, or a soundboard transducer. The AUX control knob is used to blend the add-on signal with the Takamine pickup. A small switch in the back of the preamp can be used to match the varying outputs of different pickups with th |

Audio mixers to mix different sounds and enhancing sound effects
Sound mixers, also called as sound boards or sound consoles are the most general type of audio equipment in the audio production world. Each sound operator should know about the different sound mixers available and the correct way to use them. A sound mixer take two and even more signals, merges them together and offers more than one output signal. In addition to mixing signals, sound mixers enable to adjust levels, improve sound with effects and equalization, make monitor feeds as well as record various mixes.
Mixers are available in wide variety of designs and sizes from massive studio consoles to little portable units. Mixers are generally described through the total number of channels they sport. For instance, a 12-channel mixer includes 12 input channels. That is you can put in 12 individual input sources. You may also notice a specification like “24x4x2” that signifies 24 input channels, four subgroups and 2 output channels.
The mixers accessible are perfect for project as well as home studios or also on stage and in the recording studios. Many of the mixers present incredibly low-noise along with separate mic pre THD and are proficient enough to handle sound inputs varying from whisper to scream or even can easily handle hot line level signals devoid of any extra coloration. Some mixers provides a control room or phones source matrix, tape outputs, Master aux section along with EFX, a high volume headphone amplifier as well as balanced TRS and XLR outputs.
The most amazing aspect of audio mixers is that instead of unsealed, cheap potentiometers, many of audio mixers include co-molded pots that provide substantial impact relief and strain. A majority of the audio mixers available are the perfect pick for any type of situation that needs superior audio mixing, particularly where budget or/and space constraints are a problem. The audio mixers are beneficial for all kinds of recording purposes, including mixing the line output of more than one instrument amps in one mixer channel.
What makes the audio mixers an essential part of the audio recording equipment are its various exclusive features that almost each mixer possess. Ultra low noise mixer along with highest headroom, 4 precision engineered XDR premium studio grade mic preamps, 14 line input, constant loudness pan pots, 3 band active EO of 2.5 kHz, 80 kHz and 12 kHz, phantom power for the premium condenser mics and in built power supply are few of the features of audio mixers.
Few audio mixers also sports planet earth switching power supply for the global use, separate 48v phantom power-switches at all mic inputs and 60 mm logarithmic tape faders for linear, smooth fades.
