why won't my vinyl player (Turntable) work on my amp?
does anyone know why? the amp is a good 13 years old but it still looks quite modern. but it has a power lead and the typical red and white aux lead which you can plug into most amps and anything that supports phono. but i have plugged it into my yamaha av receiver and there is no sound unless i've turned it up all the way up to +8 which is he highest and its just really tinny.
what do you reckon? is my turntable too old for my amp?
You would probably be needing additional hardware to amplify the audio signals from your turntable.
Most of the responses here refer you to having a pre-amp, and I will agree with them.
Your current amplifier, even if equipped with a standard Aux red and white leads may not necessarily indicate its capability to process the signals originating from your turntable. This is usually applicable for an external device such as additional Cd players, or other portable audio devices, but not turntables. This is because, some of the amplifiers equipped with its independent Phono auxiliary jacks, are also equipped with the built-in pre-amp, hence its capability to amplify the audio from your vinyl records. However, when you try to plug your turntable RCA jacks into the CD or Aux red & white leads, you will notice that you hardly get to hear any sound, exactly as how you experienced it that you have to turn its volume up to +8 and hear very tiny sounds.
My current amplifier which is an Onkyo 5.1 DTS Receiver, it's about six years old already, perfectly produces the sounds from my Rega P1 turntable. But when I tried to plug my turntable into a Kenwood receiver that doesn't have a dedicated Phono leads, but equipped with Aux lines instead, the same thing happens - there's hardly any sound.
Now that you have experienced this, now is the best time for you to scout some good pre-amplifiers to support the audio requirement of your turntable.
