Pioneer Turntable Parts
Bought a used turntable Pioneer PL-514 and just found it has no output on left ch. any troubleshooting tips?
I verified the cable is okay. Eg switched connectors going into Pre-amp, and it has output. I am electronics tech w/ communications equip. experience, receivers, transmitters, etc.but have never tackled a turntable before. I would like to at least do a visual inspection to see if there is any obv. blown part that I can replace.w/out a lot of work Have a meter to work with to check for continuity, etc. Any tips, starting with how to open up w/out screwing something up ?
Cool, Had friend suggest same try w/ needle. Left side still has buzz only suspect grounding issue? Will check wiring off needle. I'm guessing one side of each pair is grounded? Will needle assy. need to be re-adjusted in any way if I have to detach it to check the wiring?
if you switch L-R, does the bad channel switch from L to R?
assuming yes, then it's not the preamp. I'm assuming the preamp is a separate unit.
If you can switch LR on the cable, and the problem does NOT switch channels, then it is not the cable.
It could be the wiring from the cartridge to the connector, or the cartridge itself. Cartridges usually have 4 small spring clips with 4 connections. 2 are left channel coil and 2 are right coil. Switch the wires at the cartridge, swapping left pair with right pair. If the problem doesn't switch sides, the cartridge is bad.
